Your donation this Giving Tuesday helps provide a Sensory Room to open up a whole new world for the children we serve to learn how to cope with trauma, depression, anxiety or other diagnoses.
Join us on Giving Tuesday, a day that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Together, we can reach this important goal of $8,000 to cover the costs of a Sensory Room at our Behavioral Health Clinic by Tuesday, November 29, 2022. Your gift today will go directly toward the installation of our Sensory Room at Beloit Area Community Health Center. With the support of our community, and those passionate about mental health services, we will continue to be able to better serve our patients.
The Beloit Area Community Health Center is in the process of setting up a Sensory Room in our Behavioral Health Clinic to enhance our delivery of care for our growing number of children with complex speech, language, and communication needs including Autism, chronic anxiety disorders, and more. The Sensory Room at BACHC will offer a calm, safe, relaxing, stimulating, and therapeutic environment for those we serve. Giving Tuesday allows us the ability to purchase a variety of items for our Sensory Room. See below for an example of what a Sensory Room can look like, and what it can include!
What is a Sensory Room?
The purpose of a sensory room is to help children improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills so that children can learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network reports that one in 59 children have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and that it is four times more common among boys than among girls. For many children, the resulting difficulties with effective communication, social interaction and comprehension can result in atypical behaviors that make it difficult for them to focus and thrive in everyday settings.
Sensory Rooms can open up a whole new world for individuals with physical or cognitive impairments, and can be used to achieve hundreds of individual goals. Examples include:
- Increasing concentration and focus
- Providing mental and physical relaxation
- Decreasing aggressive behaviors
- Developing the senses of sight, touch and hearing
- Providing a sense of security and calmness
- Encouraging vocalization and communication
- And so much more
You can help us leading up to and during Giving Tuesday as we aim to provide a sensory room to help children improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills so that kiddos can learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus. Are you with us?
